1. Understand the historical processes and their reasons of the establishment of the new modern social systems under the influence of Religions and sciences.
2. Consider how these systems and ideas affect our modern society.
This class deals with how the role of religion changed in post-revolutionary French society, and why new social institutions and ideas based on science are created. The Enlightenment philosophers denied the authority of Christianity, and the "reason" that human beings are supposed to have by nature was emphasized. After the revolution was realized, the ideal society was one in which multiple religions coexist, created by humans with "morality" and "reason." These changes progress while creating various social institutions and ideas along with the industrialization of the society and the development of Sciences.

１．近代社会において宗教と科学の影響を受けながら、新しい社会制度がつくられていく歴史的な過程と理由を理解する。
２．それらの制度が現代の社会・思想にどのような影響を与えているかを考える。

この授業では、フランス革命後の社会の中で、宗教の持つ役割が変化し、科学を根拠にするあらたな社会制度や思想がつくられる様子を扱う。17・18世紀のヨーロッパで発展した啓蒙思想では、キリスト教が持つ権威的な側面が否定され、人間が生まれながら持つとされる「理性」が重視された。こうした中で、「道徳」や「理性」を備えた人間は、複数の宗教・宗派の共存を認めるという理想像が形作られていった。一方で、宗教にたいするこうした変化は、社会全体の工業化や教育制度の発展と共に、複雑な展開を見せることになる。授業のなかではカトリックを中心としながら、ユダヤ教徒などの扱いにも触れながら、近代における宗教とはなにかを考えていく。
毎回の授業では、参加者に適宜課題を提出してもらいます。次回にそれらの解説を行いますので、課題を通して積極的に授業に参加するようにしてください。
