【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

従来『日本霊異記』は国文学の分野からの研究が主で、編者の景戒の思想を研究することが中心であったが、最近では東アジアの仏教説話との比較研究も盛んであり、また歴史学の分野でもその史料性をどのように検証していくか注目されている。歴史学と文学の方法論の違いを理解しながら、東アジア世界の中で新しい日本史学の方法論を目指していく講義である。この講義では従来学習してきた日本史学とは異なり、多様な歴史学的な方法論を身につけることを到達目標とする。

In the past, research on "Nihoneiki" was mainly conducted from the field of Japanese literature and focused on the thought of the editor's reign, but recently comparative research with East Asian Buddhist narratives has become popular, and in the field of history, attention has been focused on how to verify its historicity. While understanding the differences between the methodologies of history and literature, this lecture aims to create a new methodology for Japan history in the East Asian world. Unlike the conventional study of Japan history, the goal of this course is to acquire a variety of historical methodologies.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

『今昔物語集』などに大きな影響を与えた日本最古の仏教説話である『日本霊異記』を史料として、さまざまな視点から古代の日本人の思想や地域の歴史を考察する。『日本霊異記』は九世紀の初頭に薬師寺僧景戒が編纂した仏教説話で、上中下三巻の百十六話からなる。『日本霊異記』の各地方の地名説話や伝承などが、どのように仏教説話化したか、その伝承の歴史的背景を探りながら、古代伝承の特質と地域の歴史を理解する。そして説話の中でも主に各地方の説話を採り上げ、その形成過程ついて明らかにする。従来古代の仏教史研究は国家仏教研究が中心であったが、本講義では地方や民間仏教からのアプローチのみならず、東アジアの仏教説話の影響も検証して、古代仏教の性質の解明を試みる。

Using Japan's oldest Buddhist story, the "Nihonreiki", which had a great influence on the "Konjyakumonogatarisyu", as a historical source, we will examine the thoughts of ancient Japan people and the history of the region from various perspectives. The "Nihonreiki" is a Buddhist narrative compiled by the Yakushiji monk Kageshu at the beginning of the ninth century, and consists of one hundred and sixteen stories in three volumes: upper, middle, and lower. While exploring how the toponymic stories and traditions of each region in the ""Nihonreiki" became Buddhist narratives, we will understand the characteristics of ancient traditions and the history of the region. Among the narratives, we will mainly take up the stories of each region and clarify the process of their formation. In the past, research on the history of Buddhism in ancient times has focused on the study of national Buddhism, but in this course, we will try to elucidate the nature of ancient Buddhism by examining not only approaches from local and folk Buddhism, but also the influence of Buddhist narratives in East Asia.
