Through study of the systems and actuality of the ritsuryo legal codes of the Nara and Heian periods, as well as the capital city, regional control in ancient times, the course aims to have students think specifically about the significance of the appearance of "the state” on the Japanese archipelago, the relationship between traffic and rulership, and the capital city, and the nature of the people who support it, so that students will interpret their own image of ancient society.
The formation of centralised states within the ancient Japanese archipelago occurred under the influence of the Chinese dynasties and other external factors.However, states are not formed without preconditions. They are formed by royal authority and traffic with local communities across the archipelago, and by international relations.
In this lecture, the keywords 'the state', 'the ritsuryo legal codes' and 'the capital' will be used, and the focus will be on local rule and transport, explaining international relations and archipelagic societies of the time through the movement of specific 'people, goods and information' within the archipelago and to surrounding regions.

律令に基づく古代国家の成立について、制度や都城、地域支配を学ぶことで、日本列島に「国家」が登場する意義、交通と支配の関係、都城とそこに住む人々の姿を具体的に考え、古代の社会像をみずから読み解けることを目指します。

古代の日本列島に中央集権的な国家が形成され、中国王朝などの影響を受けた古代国家が誕生します。しかし、国家は無前提に形成されるものではありません。王権と列島各地の地域社会との交通、そして、国際的な関係によって形成されるものです。
この講義では、「国家」、「律令」、「都城」をキーワードにして、さらに地方支配と交通を主軸として取り上げ、列島内や周辺諸地域との具体的な「人・モノ・情報」の移動から当時の国際関係と列島社会について解説していきます。
