Through understanding knowledge about the history of samurai in medieval Japan and the current state of latest research, this course aims to cultivate the ability to apply their ways of thinking and research methods to the analysis and consideration of fields in which students have their own interests.
This course introduces an overview of medieval Japanese history and the latest research developments, focusing on the history of the samurai. Since the instructor's specialty is the Northern and Southern Courts period, the course will primarily focus on the history of that era. However, in the spring semester, in order to understand the background leading up to the Northern and Southern Courts period, we will address medieval Japanese history during the Heian and Kamakura periods, beginning with the origins of the samurai in the early 10th century.

中世日本の武士の歴史に関する知識と最新の研究状況を理解することを通じて、その思考方法や研究手法を自らが関心を持つ分野の分析・考察に応用できる能力の育成を目指す。

武士の歴史を中心に、中世日本の歴史の概略および最新の研究状況を紹介する。講師の専門が南北朝時代であることもあり、同時代史をメインに取り上げることになるが、春学期では南北朝期に到る背景を理解するために、10世紀前半の武士の発祥に始まる平安時代と鎌倉時代の中世日本史に言及する。
