Acquire basic knowledge of Japanese medieval history. While paying particular attention to the relationship between the manorial system and the state system and political history, we aim to gain a structural understanding of the characteristics of the medieval period, which differs from the ancient and early modern periods.
The period from the 12th to the 16th century is known as the Middle Ages in Japan. The Middle Ages are the most difficult period in Japanese history to grasp and to form a unified image of. It was an age of war and famine, of the feudal system, of the growth of the samurai and the common people, of the beginning of traditional Japanese culture, and (contrary to the view that it was the origin of traditional Japan) of a different world (non-modern) that operated according to a different order from the modern world. But in the end, how should we understand this period?
In this lecture, while being conscious of comparisons with East Asia and Europe of the same period, I would like to take a structural approach to re-examining the ‘elusiveness’ of medieval Japan, focusing on the production and distribution that formed the basis of society at the time, environmental conditions, villages and samurai, autonomous social groups and the nature of state integration. In doing so, I will try to get to the heart of the characteristics of the medieval period in Japanese history.

可能な限り基礎的なところから，説明していきたいと思いますが，高校レベルでの日本史の理解があれば望ましいです。不安がある方は，参考文献にも挙げている『中世史講義』（ちくま新書）などに目を通してもらえるとよいかと思います。最新の通史として『シリーズ日本中世史』全4巻（岩波新書）も読みやすいです。概論として石井進『中世のかたち』（中央公論新社）をはじめとする「日本の中世』シリーズなど。その他、授業中に適宜提示します。

日本中世史研究に関する基本的なトピックや事項を修得する。基本的な研究史と史料論を踏まえて、特に荘園制と国家体制・政治史の関係に注目しながら、古代や近世とは異なる中世という時代の特徴を構造的に把握する。

12～16世紀の日本は，「中世」と呼ばれる時代でした。中世は，日本史のなかで，最もその特徴が捉えにくく，統一的な像を結びがたい時代です。戦乱と飢饉の時代，「封建制」の時代，武士や民衆の成長，「日本」的な伝統文化が始まる時代，あるいは（伝統日本の起源という見方とは対極的ですが）近代とは異なる秩序で動いていた異世界（非近代），実に多様な中世像が生まれてきて，人びとを魅了してきました。しかし，結局のところ，私たちは，この時代をどのように把握すればよいのでしょうか。
この講義では，同時代の東アジア・ヨーロッパとの比較を意識しながら，日本中世の「捉えどころのなさ」がどのような条件に規定されているのか，当時の社会の基盤となる生産や流通，環境条件，村落や武士，自律的な社会集団や国家統合のありかたに注目しながら構造的に捉えなおしてみたいと思います。それによって日本史上の中世という時代の特色に迫ってみます。
