This course examines the development of shogunate and domain politics (reforms) in early modern Japan, focusing on political principles that were espoused during this period. Through lectures, students will aim to acquire specialized knowledge, skills, and perspectives in the field of early modern Japanese political and intellectual history, including how to conceptualize the era and interpret the historical sources.
National governance and political rule during the Edo period were conducted with “benevolent rule” and “military authority” as core principles. How did these principles, cultivated by early modern politics and society, transform during the late early modern period, and what impact did they have on political concepts from the Bakumatsu period onward? This lecture will examine these developments, focusing on principles such as “benevolent rule（jinsei）,” “national wealth（fukoku）” and “benefit to the people（minryoku）.”

日本近世・近代史に関する高校程度の知識。
近世日本における幕府・諸藩の政治（改革）の展開について、そこで掲げられた政治理念に着目して読み解きます。講義を通して、時代の捉え方やその根拠となる史資料の読み解き方など、日本近世政治史・思想史の専門的な知識・技能・視点を身につけることを目指します。
This course examines the development of shogunate and domain politics (reforms) in early modern Japan, focusing on political principles that were espoused during this period. 江戸時代の国家統治・政治支配は、「仁政」と「武威」を中核的な理念として行われました。近世の政治・社会が培ったこれらの理念は、近世後期にかけてどのように変容し、幕末期以降の政治構想にいかなる影響を及ぼしたのでしょうか。本講義では、「仁政」、「富国」、「民力」といった理念を軸に考察していきます。
