The aim of this class is to learn about the process of how people in early modern and modern Japan formed their historical consciousness, and how they sought to understand the past and preserve and pass on historical records. We will also learn about the opportunities for society to recognize “history” and the significance of this through a series of research situations and historical records.
The course will focus on the act of discovering historical significance in various records and memories of the political society of early modern and modern Japan, and will look at the historical consciousness and social significance formed by families, regions and various groups. In particular, we will examine the spread of academic activities behind this and their relationship to the political and social situation after the Meiji Restoration, and consider how the past is perceived in modern society and how people deal with history within this.

近世・近代日本における歴史意識の形成について、人びとが過去を探求する営みおよびその記録を保存・継承する活動の展開を学び、一連の研究状況や史料に基づく事例を通して社会が「歴史」を認識する契機とその意味を学ぶ。
The aim of this class is to learn about the process of how people in early modern and modern Japan formed their historical consciousness, and how they sought to understand the past and preserve and pass on historical records. 近世・近代日本の政治社会において様々な記録・記憶から歴史的意味を見出す行為に注目し、家や地域、諸集団によって形成される歴史意識とその社会的意味を見ていきます。特に、これらの背景にある学問活動の広がりや明治維新以降の政治社会状況との関わりを検討し、近代社会における過去の捉え方とそのなかにおける人びとの歴史との向き合い方について考えていきます。
