This subject examines the characteristics of Japan's foreign relations in the early modern period, the so-called ‘seclusion’, from a variety of perspectives. It aims to enable students to understand that even restricted relations were characterized by diverse economic, diplomatic and cultural exchanges, which affected both Japan and the rest of the world. The aim is then for participants to understand the significance of early modern society for the modernisation of Japan.
Early modern Japanese society is generally understood to have been ‘seclusion’, and is often understood to have formed a society with its own unique culture on the premise. In reality, however, diplomacy, trade, foreign information and cultural exchange took place at what are known as the ‘four mouths’. In this lecture, we will understand the specific characteristics of each of these mouths, and reveal the various influences from abroad on the development of early modern societies. At the same time, the course will also examine what Japan meant for the world from the 17th to the 19th century. The lecture will be the main focus of this course, but historical documents will be presented to students to think about their own interpretations.

| 8 | 松前口‐長崎・中国東北部をつなぐ回路として 現在の北海道エリアは、かつては日本の国内とするか、あいまいな場所であったが、その後国内に積極的に取り込まれていく過程を検討する。また同時に貿易において、中国につながる意味も考える。 |
| 9 | 島原の乱とキリシタン禁制の展開 外交政策は、国内政策と連動している。特に日本のキリシタン禁制政策は、対外関係と連動していることから、その意味を考える。 |

この科目では、いわゆる「鎖国」と称される近世日本の対外関係の特質について、様々な観点から検討する。制限された関係であっても多様な経済・外交・文化的交流があり、日本と世界双方向に影響があったことを理解できるようになることを目指す。その上で、日本の近代化に近世社会がどのような意味をもったか、受講者が理解することを目的する。

近世日本社会は、一般的に「鎖国」と理解され、それを前提に独自の文化を持った社会を形成したと理解されることが多い。ところが、実際には、「四つの口」と言われる場所で、外交・貿易・海外情報・文化の交流がなされている。この講義では、それぞれの口の特質を理解し、その上で、近世社会の展開に与えた海外からの様々な影響を明かにする。同時に、世界にとって17世紀から19世紀にかけて、どのような意味をもっていたかも検討していく。なお本科目では、講義が中心になるが、史料なども随時提示し、解釈について受講者各位に考えてもらいたい。
Early modern Japanese society is generally understood to have been ‘seclusion’, and is often understood to have formed a society with its own unique culture on the premise. In reality, however, diplomacy, trade, foreign information and cultural exchange took place at what are known as the ‘four mouths’. In this lecture, we will understand the specific characteristics of each of these mouths, and reveal the various influences from abroad on the development of early modern societies. At the same time, the course will also examine what Japan meant for the world from the 17th to the 19th century. The lecture will be the main focus of this course, but historical documents will be presented to students to think about their own interpretations.
