To consider the historical evolution of modern Japan from a world history perspective while investigating the origins of the ‘history problem’ that persists between Japan and North and South Korea.
In this class, we will consider how Japan confronted Korea and carried out colonial rule while responding to trends in world history and Korean societal movements. To this end, you will be introduced to several historical sources which offer insight about the situation during the period such as Japanese understandings of Korea as well as colonial understandings of Korean society.

日朝関係を軸に、近代日本の史的展開を世界史的視野から概観するとともに、今日も日本と朝鮮・韓国の間に横たわる「歴史問題」の所在を探る。
To consider the historical evolution of modern Japan from a world history perspective while investigating the origins of the ‘history problem’ that persists between Japan and North and South Korea.
この授業では、近代日本が、世界史的動向や朝鮮社会の動きに規定されながら、朝鮮とどのように対峙し、植民地統治をおこなっていったのかについて考察する。その中で、日本社会の朝鮮認識や朝鮮社会の植民地統治対する認識など、当時の状況を考察する上で役立つ史料を出来るだけ多く紹介する。
