The course aims to critically examine the region of the American South, considering its historical, geographical, social, and cultural boundaries. As we focus on the region, we will consider how to define and redefine the U.S. history from the South.
This course focuses on the history of the American South and considers how its history impacted U.S. history as a whole. The class will pay close attention to the region’s diversity, such as race, ethnicity, status, class, gender, and religion. Through such a process, we will explore the multiplicity of the perspectives and narratives in which the region embraces. Although the course mainly covers the colonial period to the nineteenth century, we will also contemplate how studying the history of the American South helps us understand the contemporary issues of U.S. society today.

南部からの視点を検討するため、アメリカ史の一般的知識があると良い。そのため、参考文献にアメリカ史を通史的に学べる文献をリストした。各自、必要に応じて通史も確認すること。
本授業の目標は、アメリカ合衆国の「南部」とはどこを指すのか、どういった特色を持つ地域なのか、その歴史や地理、社会、文化を理解することである。さらに、南部という地域からアメリカ史を考察し、歴史の語りがどのように変容するのかを問い直していく。

本授業では、アメリカ合衆国の「南部」に注目し、その歴史がどのようにアメリカ史全体を影響してきたのかを概観する。南部地域内における人種、民族、身分、階級、ジェンダー、宗教などのあらゆる多様性に目を向けながら、様々な歴史の視点やナラティブを検討していく。本講義で扱う時代区分は植民地期から19世紀までであるが、現代のアメリカ社会との接続も合わせて考えていきたい。
