Overcoming the anachronistic framework of the United States, historians now describe early modern North America as contested spaces between a variety of Native American and European groups. The goal of this course is to consider the achievements of the spatial and Indigenous turns and to identify remaining problems; students learn to critically rethink existing historical understandings and disciplinary practices.
This course examines relations between Indigenous peoples in North America and colonial Europeans, using concepts and keywords that can be (and have been) applied to other historical and contemporary cases. While our main focus is on the eastern coastal areas from the seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, we keep in mind the diversity within North America and attempt to connect early Native American history with early modern European history and Atlantic history. In addition to historical methods, we adopt a multidisciplinary approach by drawing on scholarship in related fields such as international law, intercultural communication, literature, translation, and gender.

アメリカ合衆国がまだなかった時代の歴史をその国家の枠組みで書いてきた不条理さを克服し、近世北アメリカ史研究は先住民とヨーロッパ人のせめぎあいの時代として、その時代特有の見方がなされるようになっている。この授業では、ここ数十年の近世アメリカ史研究の空間論的転回ならびに先住民論的転回（どこからどこまでを研究対象にするか、誰の目線で叙述するか等の変化）の成果を確認するとともに、依然残っている問題を抽出するなかで、既存の歴史像や学問のあり方を批判的に問い直すことができるようになることを目標にする。

この講義では、先住民・植民者関係を、歴史上あるいは現代の他の地域にも適用できそうな（現にされているものも含む）概念やキーワードを使いながら考察する。詳細に扱うのは17世紀～19世紀半ばの東部沿岸が中心になるが、北米大陸の内部の多様性に留意するとともに、アメリカ先住民史をさらに広い視座に位置づけ、近世ヨーロッパ史やアトランティック・ヒストリーとの接続を試みる。また、歴史学の研究手法に加え、国際法、異文化コミュニケーション、文学、翻訳研究、ジェンダー論など、隣接・関連する学問分野で議論されていることも援用して多角的に考察する。
