The course provides students with opportunities to gain knowledge regarding regional and historical development of crafts, manuscripts, and architecture created by/for Muslims, mainly in the Middle East from the establishment of Islam in the 7th century to the present day (it will also cover the “Islamic art” from Spain, North Africa, Central Asia and South Asia). By the end of this course, students will be able to explain the cultural and political background of each Muslim dynasty by comparing and contrasting works of art from various periods and regions.
The lectures will first offer an overview of Islamic doctrines and the differences among its sects, and then consider, from multiple perspectives, what distinctions these teachings brought about in crafts, manuscripts, and architecture created by/for Muslims primarily in the Middle East from the 7th century onwards. Subsequently, the course will analyze, in chronological order and with an emphasis on the connection between the vertical (regionality) and horizontal (temporality) axes, what sort of cultural, religious, and political backgrounds were behind these crafts, manuscripts, and architecture (2nd to 12th sessions). In the 14th lecture, the course will introduce Islamic artworks that can be viewed in Japan.

イスラームが成立した7世紀以降、現代に至るまでの間に、中東（西アジア）を中心とする地域においてムスリムのために／ムスリムによって生み出された工芸品・写本絵画・建築の地域的・史的展開についての知識を習得することで、各時代・地域の文化について、具体的な作品例を挙げながら説明できるようになることを目標とします。考察の対象となる地域には、中東のほか、時代によっては、イベリア半島、北アフリカ、中央アジア、南アジアも含まれますので、高校レベルの世界史の通史の復習にも役立つでしょう。

本講義では、まず、イスラームの教義と各宗派の違いについて概観したのち、この教えがムスリムのために／ムスリムによって7世紀以降主に西アジア地域で生み出された工芸品・写本絵画・建築にどのような特色をもたらしたのかについて多角的に検討します（第1回）。 続いて、それらの工芸品・写本絵画・建築が、どのような文化的・宗教的・政治的背景のもと生み出されたのか、タテ（地域性）とヨコ（時代性）の繋がりに重点を置きながら、時系列順に分析します（第2回〜第12回）。合わせて、第14回の講義では、開講期間中に日本国内で見ることのできるイスラーム美術作品について紹介し、受講生のみなさんが、講義で学んだことを実際に自身の目で確かめ、自ずから作品について思考するための一助とします。
