This course examines the distinctive characteristics of social studies by exploring the historical background of its emergence, its development over time, and the underlying principles of the current Course of Study. Building on foundational theories of social studies education, it focuses in particular on discussions surrounding civic qualities and competencies, and considers key issues related to social studies education. Through this process, the course aims to foster the fundamental knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of social studies teachers.
This course aims to develop an understanding of the knowledge and skills required of social studies teachers with strong practical competence who can cultivate the fundamental qualities and abilities that underpin students’ citizenship. It also examines the current state of diverse social issues related to civic qualities, enabling participants to gain insights that inform the design and structure of social studies lessons.

基本的に授業は学生との議論をベースとするため、積極的な受講態度が期待される。なお、受講者の問題関心や受講者数に応じて授業計画を一部変更する場合がある。必ずしも教員にならない学生にとっても現代社会を主体的に生きるために必要な資質につながる示唆を得ることは有益である。初等教育専攻課程の学生はもちろんのこと、教育学専攻の学生も積極的に履修をしてほしい。
社会科の特質について、社会科の誕生の背景や変遷、現行学習指導要領の趣旨について学ぶ。社会科教育の基礎的な理論を土台とし、「公民的資質」に関する議論を中心として社会科教育に関わる諸課題を考察・理解することで、社会科教員として求められる基本的な資質・能力の形成を目指す。
