This course is an introduction to comparative children's literature. It has two main goals: (1) to introduce students to a wide range of issues and controversies in the academic study of children's literature from around the world, and (2) to provide students with the opportunity to form their own opinions, thoughts and wonderings about specific children's books from around the world, and about children's literature in general.
Through a wide range of readings, including both children's books and academic articles, we will consider some of the questions that children's literature raises, including:
1. What separates children's literature from other kinds of literature?
2. Who is children's literature written for, and what does it accomplish?
3. What can children's literature tell us about the cultures that it emerges from, and/or the cultures that it depicts?
4. How does children's literature conform to, expand or resist our understanding of what education is?
