This course aims to examine modern British history from the 19th to the early 20th century with special focus on gendered perspectives in society, education and politics.
The gender order constructed in modern Western societies formed an important basis of the modern nation-state.
It also spread across the national borders of Western nation-states and expanded to the colonies and countries and areas beyond the Empires within the process of 'modernisation'.
This course takes a gendered historical approach to examine how the gender order of modern Western societies were constructed, maintained and transformed during modern period with a close focus on modern British society.
Each session will cover specific research topics by critically reading an analysing primary and secondary sources.
In addition, through taking a gendered historical approach, students are also encouraged to reflect and develop their interest and understanding of current gender issues in national and global scale.
Students will:
1) understand the reading materials, prepare for group discussions, and submit weekly assignments,
2) participate in group discussions to share their understandings and opinions based on the given reading materials in the class,
3) conduct individual research to further their understanding of the course contents & share the research findings in individual presentations,
presentations on Study Abroad partner institutions, and
4) review their learning outcomes in the Final Report.
