【Course Objectives】

“Visual-poetry combines visual art and poetic sensibility by manipulating images and letterforms.” From a wide perspective, we will analyze the different aspects and interpretations of "Visual Poetry" in a Japanese context. After beginning with a an example of the word made concrete in statue-form dating back to the Edo period, we will learn to appreciate find the vocabulary to discuss the varying manifestations of visual poetry: Asemic Writing, Calligrams, Calligraphy, Collages, Haiku, Japanese Translations, Lexical Poems, Mail Art, and Photography.

【Course Contents】

Students must complete the readings, explore archival material on the web, and attend all lectures and seminar
sessions.
Creative and written work will consist of:
1. Weekly assignments creating original works based on subjects in textbook
2. Original translations of haiku and other lexical Japanese poetry
3. An oral presentation of original research on one of the artists discussed during the course
4. A final collection of works created and translated during the course
