What is environmental thought? How is it different from nature conservation? How is it related to pollution in the past and the SDGs today? This lecture aims to provide an intellectual foundation for solving environmental problems in a realistic way by looking at the history of environmental thought as a philosophical approach to environmental issues, while responding to the above questions.
Of course, environmental issues lie behind environmental thought. So, what are environmental issues? What exactly is considered a “problem”? For example, let's consider the issue of climate change. In this case, is the fact that the earth is warming itself a “problem”? What kind of mechanism causes global warming? Or, rather, is the fact that humans are causing global warming a “problem”? Even if that is the case, is there any theoretical flaw in the hypothesis that CO2 is the cause? Can we respond accurately to questions like these? Rather, are we not falling into a state of thoughtlessness, taking the “problem” for granted?
In this lecture, we will take a bird's-eye view of the history of environmental thought and trace its diverse developments, and together with the students, we will work to question the self-evident nature of “environmental problems”. I have a hunch that this work will also lead to a re-examination of environmental thought itself.

環境思想とは何であろうか？ それは、自然保護とはどう違うのだろうか？ あるいは、かつての公害や現在のSDGｓとどう関係するのだろうか？ 本講義は、環境問題に対応する思想的アプローチとしての環境思想の系譜を俯瞰することをとおして、前記の問いに応答しつつ、環境問題を現実的に解決していくための知的基盤を習得していくことを目標とします。
What is environmental thought? How is it different from nature conservation? How is it related to pollution in the past and the SDGs today? This lecture aims to provide an intellectual foundation for solving environmental problems in a realistic way by looking at the history of environmental thought as a philosophical approach to environmental issues, while responding to the above questions.
環境思想の背後には、当然、環境問題がある。では、環境問題とは何だろうか？ いったい何が「問題」とされているのだろうか？ たとえば、気候変動問題を考えてみよう。この場合、地球が温暖化していること自体が「問題」なのだろうか？ いったい温暖化とはどのようなメカニズムによって生じる現象なのだろうか？ あるいは、そうではなくて、温暖化という現象を人間が作り出していることが「問題」なのだろうか？ 仮にそうだとして、CO2原因説という仮説に理論的な不備はないのだろうか？ 私たちはこうした問いに対して正確に応答することができるだろうか？ むしろ、「問題」を自明視し、思考停止に陥ってはいないだろうか？
本講義は、環境思想の系譜を俯瞰し、その多様な展開を辿っていくことを通じて「環境問題」の自明性を疑う作業を、受講生の皆さんとともに進めていきたい。その作業が翻って環境思想そのものを鍛え直していくことにもつながっていくであろうことを予感して。
