This course introduces students to elementary Greek grammar. By the end of the academic year, students will be reading some passages from the New Testament or the Plato’s dialogues etc. with the help of a dictionary and a grammar book.
[I. Overview]
The three main contents of the spring semester classes are as follows:
A. To learn the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet.
B. To learn the declension tables of nouns.
C. To learn the concept of the case of nouns and to translate short, simple sentences.
Remarks:
Regarding A, many letters in the Greek alphabet are similar to Roman letters, so anyone can memorize them with a week or two of hard study.
B is the most lengthy. Therefore, we have students memorize the main declension tables each time, and we check their memorization in the following week’s quiz. Most of the material other than the main declension tables is an application of what has been memorized, so there's no need to worry.
Regarding C, the meaning of cases can be compared to the Japanese particles (‘te-ni-o-ha’). Therefore, sentences can be easily translated by replacing the cases with Japanese particles. We’ll check whether students have mastered this method and are able to translate sentences correctly.
[II. Classroom procedures]
The classes will be conducted as follows. In the first class, only a, d, e and f will be given.
a. [Before class] Download the teaching materials in advance if necessary.
b. [Start of class] Quiz (approximately 5–10 minutes).
c. Answers to exercises (students’ presentations in turn).
d. Hand out materials and study new grammar points.
e. Instructions for the next quiz and exercises.
f. [After class] Memorise the material for the quiz and complete the exercises.
[III. Memorisation of the Greek alphabet (by the third class)]
From the third class, it is assumed that students are able to read and write the Greek alphabet.
The following two checks will be made to ensure that students are able to read and write the Greek alphabet:
i. Self-checking with quizzes in the second and third classes.
ii. A short submission assignment after the first and second sessions (to be corrected and returned to each student).
Students who are unable to attend the first and second classes due to unavoidable circumstances can submit their assignments later.

| 小テストの実施（配布する紙に筆記），練習問題の解答等（テキストの音読・和訳）の口述と教員からの質問に対する回答． |
事前・事後学修は毎回合計４時間程度必要．具体的な内容は毎回プリントを配布して指示する．主な内容は名詞や動詞の変化表を覚えること（１時間３０分以内を想定）と，練習問題を解くこと（２時間３０分以上を想定）の２つ．
授業を欠席した場合は，遅れを取り戻すために授業時間と授業時間外の時間を含めて次の回までに最低６時間の学習が必要．なお，やむを得ず授業を欠席した場合はCanvas LMSを用いて練習問題等の添削や，授業で扱った内容に関する質問を行うことができる．欠席した回の小テストを別の回に受験すること，欠席した回に行うはずだった練習問題の発表を別の回に振り替えることは可能なので，各自申し出ること．
About four hours of pre- and post-learning are required each time. Specific content will be explained in handouts distributed each time. The main content consists of memorizing declension tables for nouns and conjugation tables for verbs (up to approximately one and a half hours) and translation (approximately two and a half hours or more).
If you miss a class, you will need to study at least six hours before the next session, including class time and home study, to make up for the delay. If you are unavoidably absent from a class, you can submit your assignments to the Canvas LMS to correct and ask questions about the content of the class. It is possible to take the quiz of the missed class in a different class, or to transfer the presentation of the exercises that were to be done in the missed class to another class.

この授業を履修するための予備知識は特に必要ないが，次に挙げるような簡単な（英語学習でも用いる）文法用語は断りなく使用するのでわからなければ調べておくこと：母音，子音，主語，述語，補語，直接目的語，間接目的語，名詞・代名詞，形容詞，動詞（他動詞・自動詞，不定詞，3人称等），副詞，接続詞．
情報機器を持参する必要はない．配布資料は紙媒体で用意する．配布資料はPDFファイルでも用意し，Canvas LMSに掲載するのでそれを利用してもよい．
課題提出先はCanvas LMS（紙媒体でもよい）．課題は手書きしたものをスキャンまたは写真に撮って提出すればよい（ワープロソフトを使わなくてよい）．

［I. 概要］
春学期の授業の主な内容は次の三つである．
A. ギリシア語アルファベット24文字を覚える．
B. 名詞の格変化を覚える．
C. 名詞の格の概念を覚え，それにもとづいて短めの簡単な文を訳す．
Aについて，ギリシア語アルファベットの多くの文字はローマ字と似ているので，一週間〜二週間かけてしっかり勉強すれば誰でも覚えられる．
Bの分量が一番多い．そこで主要な格変化表を毎回暗記してもらい，覚えられたかどうかを次週の小テストで確認する．主要な格変化表以外はおおむね暗記したものの応用なので，心配する必要はない．
Cの「格の概念」については，ギリシア語の格を日本語の助詞に置き換えて考えれば，それほど難しくはない．この方法を身に付け，客観的に文章を理解できるようになったかどうかを確認する．
［II. 授業の進め方］
授業は次のように行う．第１回はa, d, e, fのみ行う．
a. ［授業前］必要があれば教材を事前にダウンロードしておく．
b. ［授業開始］小テストを実施（５〜１０分程度）．
c. 練習問題の答え合わせ（受講生が順番に発表）．
d. 教材を配布し新たな文法事項を学習する．
e. 次回の小テストと練習問題の指示．
f. ［授業後］小テストのための暗記を行い，練習問題を解いてくる．
［III. ギリシア語アルファベットの暗記（第３回授業時まで）］
第３回の授業からはギリシア語アルファベットの読み書きができるようになっていることを前提に授業を進める．
ギリシア語アルファベットの読み書きができるようになっているかは次の二つで確認することができる．
i. 第２回，第３回の小テストで自己点検
ii. 第１回と第２回の後に課される簡単な提出課題（添削して各自に返却する予定）
やむを得ず第１回，第２回の授業に参加することができなかった学生は提出課題を後で提出することができる．
