Students will learn introductory Latin grammar, understand the structure of sentences, and become able to grasp the meaning of simple sentences. The aim is to finish the first half of the textbook in the spring semester.
Used as the official language in the ancient Roman Empire, Latin continued to support the Western world as the official language of Christianity even after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and as a major language in academic and literary fields until modern times. Romance languages such as Italian and French are derived from Latin, and learning about Latin is an aid to a deeper understanding of the Western world today.
The class will use specified textbooks to learn basic grammatical items, and will progress to practical exercises such as translation and analysis of grammatical structure.

ラテン語の初級文法を身につけ、文の構造を理解し、平易な文章について文意を取ることが出来るようにする。春学期では教科書の前半部を終えることを目指す。
Students will learn introductory Latin grammar, understand the structure of sentences, and become able to grasp the meaning of simple sentences. The aim is to finish the first half of the textbook in the spring semester.
ラテン語は古代ローマ帝国で公用語として使われた言語で、西ローマ帝国滅亡後もキリスト教の公用語として、また近代に至るまで学術、文学の領域でも主要な言語として西洋世界を支え続けてきた。イタリア語やフランス語といったいわゆるロマンス語はラテン語から派生した言語であり、ラテン語について学ぶことは今日においても西洋世界を深く知る一助となるだろう。
本授業では所定の教科書を使いながら基礎的な文法事項を学びつつ、文法構造の解析、訳などの練習問題を行っていく。
