By looking back at Western thought since the 17th century, when modern science, the source of modern knowledge, emerged, and by tracing how the issue of religion has been considered in Western thought, we will consider how people today should deal with the issue of religion or faith.
In general, each session will take up one Western European thinker at a time from the 17th to the 19th century, and will primarily introduce the individual's religious understanding.

取り上げる思想家の著作や関連する文献を多く紹介するので、各自が興味をもったものを実際に読み、理解を深めていっていただきたい。また、毎回の授業で問いが設定され、授業はその問いにそって展開されるので、授業後に各自この問いに対する答えを作成しておくとポイントがつかみやすい。

現代の知の源泉である近代科学が登場してきた17〜19世紀の西欧思想を振り返り、そこにおいて宗教の問題がどう考えられてきたかをたどることで、今日の人間が宗教、あるいは信仰の問題とどう向き合うべきかを考える。

１７世紀から１９世紀までの西欧の思想家を原則として１回に一人ずつ取り上げ、その宗教理解を中心に紹介する。
