【Course Objectives】

In this course, we will try to clarify what kind of study history is, using traditions from ancient times to modern times as historical materials, and to bring out the historical image behind it. The goal is not to be biased toward the historical image of the nation as has been studied in high school, but to understand the lives and beliefs of the people who lived in the region.

【Course Contents】

In this class, we will look at the "general history" of the history of Japan thought using the legend of Urashima Taro as a material. The old tale of Urashima Taro, which everyone knows today, is actually based on an ancient tradition established in the Nara period, and has been handed down to the present day to reflect that era in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The ancient Urashima tradition was a story of Shinsen thought, but the content changed with the changes in the history of Japan from the Middle Ages to the early modern period to the modern era, and it changed to a story that we know someday. On the other hand, the Hagoromo tradition, which was established together with the Urashimako tradition, is a story closely related to the Tanabata tradition, but it was also established in ancient times under the influence of Chinese narratives, but unlike the Urashimako tradition, it does not spread throughout Japan.
The purpose of this lecture is to examine the history of thought in Japan from a historical perspective and understand the methodology of how the ancient Urashimako tradition and the Hagoromo tradition were established, how they changed through ancient and medieval times to the early modern period, and how they have been passed down to the present day.
