This course is an introduction to ancient Greek culture. No knowledge of ancient Greek or any foreign language (except English) is required. This course covers Greek and Latin Classics every other year.
The aim of this course is to study several aspects of ancient Greek culture and to enable students to explain these in their own words.
I. Pre-class, Class, and Post-class Study Schedule
(1) Friday: Materials are distributed via Canvas LMS (see the ‘Study Required Outside of Class’ section below).
(2) At the start of class: Quiz (approximately 10 minutes, written on a paper provided, excluding the first class).
(3) Distribution of class materials.
(4) Lecture.
(5) Post-class study (see the ‘Study Required Outside of Class’ section below).
II. Contents
As shown in the ‘Course Schedule’ below, the ancient Greek culture and language will be explained from as many aspects as possible, including urban structure, architecture, food, clothing, shelter, politics, economics, etc.
III. Content and Amount of Handouts
Handouts are approximately 16–20 pages long each time. More than half of these are illustrations and citations, so you can expect to memorize approximately 100 pages per semester.
The lecture content, references, and illustrations will be included in the handouts. References and illustrations include citations from ancient Greek texts (using Japanese translations), photographs of ruins and artifacts, drawings, maps, etc.

I. 概要
事前・事後学修は毎回合計４時間程度必要（２単位かつ週２時間授業の科目での必須の事前・事後学修時間）．

授業で配布するプリントのPDF版を前週の金曜日頃にCanvas LMSに用意するので，それを用いて次回の授業の内容をあらかじめ把握することができる．
III. 事後学修
次の２つは必須．
（１）授業のキーワードを探し出してまとめること．小テストではそれらのキーワードを理解しているかどうか試す（以下の「成績評価方法・基準」参照）．キーワードには，カタカナで書かれるような固有名詞や術語（テクニカル・ターム）も含む．
（２）授業の内容を１〜２段落程度でまとめ，自分の言葉で述べることができるようにすること．これは小テストでは出題しないが，各自で行っておくこと．
これらに加え，次のことを行うとさらに理解が深まる．
（３）特に気になった主題について，授業資料に付された参考文献でより詳しく調べる．

予備知識は特に必要としない．ギリシア語をはじめとする外国語の知識も必要ない（英語を除く）．幅広い分野の学生の受講を歓迎する．

この授業では古代ギリシア人の文化に関して入門講義を行う．古代ギリシア語や（英語を除く）外国語の知識は必要ない．なお，当科目では隔年で西洋古典学（古代ギリシアと古代ローマに関する学問）を扱っている．
この授業の目標は，古代ギリシア人の文化についていくつかの側面から学び，それらを自分の言葉で説明できるようにすることである．

II. 授業で扱う内容
下の「授業計画」にあるように，古代ギリシア人の文化について，都市の構造，建築，衣食（住），政治，経済など，できるだけ多くの側面から説明する．
III. 授業プリントの内容と分量
配布資料は毎回全１６〜２０ページ程度．そのうち半分以上は図版や原典（日本語訳）の引用なので，１学期間に学修する（覚える必要がある）のは約１００ページと思っておけばよい．
授業中に説明する内容や，参照する文献や図版に関しては，可能な限り配布資料の中に含めるようにする．参照する文献や図版とは，具体的には古代ギリシア語文献の引用（日本語訳を用いる），遺跡や遺物の写真，想像図，地図などである．
