【Course Objectives】

•Become familiar with crucial concepts in the study of history and culture, such as nationalism, transnationalism, Orientalism, and global history.
•Examine and reflect on the diverse relationships between Japan and its East Asian neighbors
•Explore the idea of cultural influence, exchange, and resistance
•Use tools of analysis from the Humanities and social sciences to examine specific cultural productions

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will examine the historical processes and contemporary dynamics that shaped Japan’s relationship with its East Asian neighbors, especially China and Korea. In the first part of the semester, we will explore political, cultural, economic, and religious relations across East Asia from a historical perspective. We will also see how they have evolved over the modern period to the present. In the second and final part, we will compare East Asian culture in selected fields, such as food and popular culture, to discuss the diverse relationships between Japan and its neighbors in the postwar period.
