This course roughly falls into the group of courses that deal with British literature, but includes works by Irish and post-colonial Caribbean and African Authors. The main purposes of this course is for the students to be introduced to 1) the elementary methods of analysing the text of fiction through close reading, 2) the understanding of the cultural and historical backgrounds of fictional works, and 3) a higher level of English comprehension.
A presentation team and a question team for each session will be appointed. All students will be assigned at least one presentation and one question task during the semester. The responsibilities of each team are as follows:
Members of the presentation team will work together to create a presentation containing (1) a summary of the assigned part of the text (2) notes to aid the understanding of the work [cultural and historical background, definitions of proper nouns, etc. and (3) an analysis of the assigned part. The presentation team must send their handout to both the question team and the teacher before the class session. The presentation team members will distribute their handout to the remainder of students on the day of the class and make a presentation.
The question team will read the handout in advance and prepare questions to improve the class’ understanding of the work. After the presentation team finishes their presentation, members of the question team will provide their questions to the presenters.
All students will be asked to write several response papers over the duration of the course. Also, there will be a reading and essay task on the Japanese translated edition of V. S. Naipaul's Miguel Street.

この授業で扱うテクストはどれも、ほぼすべての学生にとって初めて出会うものでしょう。従って、丁寧な予習が必須です。次回の範囲のテクストに関し、知らない単語の意味と発音を辞書で調べ、精読して、意味の取りにくい箇所に関してはメモを取っておくなどしてください。授業でランダムに指名したときに、明らかにテクストの予習を怠っていることが分かった場合は、平常点から減点します。
また、授業後の振り返りも必須です。授業において、テクストやその読み方に関してどのような新しいことが分かったか、その新しい知見を今後の読解にどう生かせるか、よく考えてみてください。
事前・事後の学習に必要な時間は、週に4時間です。

この授業は主にイギリスの小説を扱うことになっていますが、アイルランドや、イギリスによる植民地支配以降のカリブやアフリカの英語作家たちも含みます。短篇小説の丁寧な読解を通じて、小説というテクストを分析するやり方の初歩を身につけていただくこと、作品の背後にある文化や歴史への目配りの仕方を覚えていただくこと、英語力を向上させていただくことがこの授業の主な目的です。

「発表者グループ」「質問者グループ」のサイクルを割り当てます。それぞれの仕事は、以下の通り。
発表者グループ――グループ全員で協力して、(1) 担当箇所のあらすじ (2) 作品理解を促進する注解 [文化的・歴史的状況や固有名詞などについて] (3) 担当箇所の内容分析 をプリントにまとめ、コメントグループと教員には事前に手渡すかメール送信しておく。他の人々にはプリントを授業時に配布し、それをもとに発表を行なう。
質問グループ――発表者グループから受け取ったプリントをあらかじめ読んでおき、作品理解のための質問 (クラス全員で検討する) を複数個考えておく。授業では、作品理解のための質問を質問グループから発表する。
数回に一度、レスポンスペーパーを書いてもらいます。また、毎回の授業とは別に、課題図書としてV・S・ナイポールの『ミゲル・ストリート』を邦訳 (岩波文庫) で読んでもらい、中間レポートを書いてもらいます。最終回は、添削した中間レポートをもとに、課題図書の読書会を行ないます。
