This course aims to introduce students to literary works in English, which can be read through in a week, provide opportunities to experience the joy of critical debate through careful reading of each famous literary work and improve their ability to read and comprehend English texts as well.
Students will read a shorter literary work written in English (from short stories and poems) every week and discuss it with other participants. In class, two groups are assigned in advance, and each group is asked to prepare a summary covering the author, plot, difficult parts, theme, and impressions and give a presentation on it. This serves as a starting point for everyone except the presenting group to participate in lively discussions and gain a deeper understanding of the work. In addition, the students will read a designated longer English literary work (a novel or a play) translated into Japanese and submit their book report by a fixed date in June and will discuss it in class. Details about the shorter works to be read each week, the designated longer works and the deadline for the submission of its book report will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.

授業開始前にイギリス文学作品を、最低何か一つ（長さは問わない）は読んでおく。毎回扱う英語作品を授業前に熟読して準備し（各回約2時間）、授業で得られた知識を参考にして作品を読み直し、推薦された参考文献などにも目を通して内容理解を深める（各回約2時間）。毎回Googleドライブにアップロードされる音声・画像・動画資料を授業の前後に視聴すると学習効果が高まる。

演習なので勤勉な参加が求められる。やむを得ない理由で欠席する場合はメールで事前連絡すること。
毎週一回で読み切れる分量の英語文学をじっくり読んで味わい、同じ作品を読んだ参加者同士が議論をぶつけ合う楽しさを味わうことを目標とし、同時に英語読解力の向上も図る。

英語で書かれた文学作品（イギリスの短篇小説や詩）を毎回一つずつ予め読んできて教室で議論する。授業では、二つの担当グループを予め決めて、それぞれが作者、粗筋、難解箇所、主題、感想などについてレジュメを用意し、それに基づいて発表を行なってもらい、それを糸口にして発表グループ以外の全員が活発な議論に参加し、作品を深く理解してゆく。また、課題図書としてイギリスの長篇作品の翻訳（小説か戯曲）を一つ指定して、6月の期日までにレポートを提出してもらい、それに基づいて討論を行なう。各回に扱う作家と作品、指定長篇作品とそのレポート提出期日を明示した授業計画表を最初の授業で配布する。
