Through reading Oscar Wilde's short stories in the original as well as the Japanese translation of The Picture of Dorian Gray as assigned reading, students will acquire basic English reading comprehension and critical thinking skills to understand English literature academically.
In this course, students will do a close reading of Oscar Wilde's short stories in a seminar style based on student presentations and class-wide discussion. Wilde is said to be a master of irony and paradox, and there is often a gap between what is written literally and the author's actual message. Students are expected to read these gaps and consider why such gaps are effective in literature.
In addition, all students will read Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray as an assigned reading and submit a report in June. Feedback on this report will be given during the last week of class, through which students will learn the basics of report writing.

オスカー・ワイルドの短編を原文で、また課題図書として『ドリアン・グレイの肖像』を翻訳で読むことを通じ、英文学を学問的に読解する基礎的な英文読解力および批評的な思考能力を身につけます。

この授業では、受講生が交代で行う発表とクラス全体で行うディスカッションを基盤とした演習形式で、オスカー・ワイルドの短編を精読します。ワイルドは皮肉や逆説の名手と言われ、文字通りに書かれていることと作品が実際に訴えるメッセージの間には、しばしばずれがあります。こうしたギャップを読み解き、何故そのようなずれが文学においては効果的なのかを、ともに考えていきたいと思います。
また、課題図書としてワイルドの『ドリアン・グレイの肖像』を全員が読み、6月にレポートを提出してもらいます。授業最終週にこの課題レポートに関するフィードバックを行い、レポート作成の基礎についても学びます。
