Through close-reading of an American novella, short stories, and poems, students will gain an understanding of the effects of narrative techniques, such as perspective, and develop the skills to analyze the rhetoric of literary works.
In this course, we will focus on the issue of perspective—“who is speaking,” “to whom,” “at what point in time,” etc.—in American literary works to explore key rhetorical strategies employed by fiction writers. Each class will cover 3 to 4 pages of English text, so students are expected to carefully read the material in advance, using a dictionary. Additionally, students will present papers and lead discussions several times throughout the semester to learn the roles required in a seminar-style class. Through these activities, as well as the final essay, students will acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to analyze literary works in an academic format, moving beyond "book reports" to writing formal scholarly essays. In addition to the class work, students will read the Japanese translation of Henry Jame’s The Turn of the Screw, and write an essay on the novel.

アメリカの中長篇小説、短編小説、詩の精読をとおして、とりわけ視点といった語りの技法の効果を理解し、文学テクストのレトリックを分析できるようになる。
Through close-reading of an American novella, short stories, and poems, students will gain an understanding of the effects of narrative techniques, such as perspective, and develop the skills to analyze the rhetoric of literary works.
この授業では、「誰が」「誰に向かって」「どの時点で」語っているのかといった視点の問題に着目して、アメリカの文学作品を読み解きます。
毎授業、3〜4ページ程の英語のテクストを扱うので、参加者は必ず事前に辞書を使って課題を精読したうえで授業に臨んでください。
参加者は学期中、複数回、プレゼンテーションやディスカッションリーダーを担当し、演習形式の授業で求められる役割を学んでいきます。
発表やディスカッション、そして最終的にはレポートの執筆をとおして、「読書感想文」ではなく「論文」というフォーマットで学術的に文学作品を論じるために必要な基礎知識や技術を身につけます。また、毎週の授業とは別に、課題図書として、ヘンリー・ジェイムズの『ねじの回転』を邦訳で読み、レポートを作成します。
