As indicated in the curriculum map, the course aims to cultivate the “reading comprehension skills that will serve as the basis for future study and research.” Students will practice presenting logically in reports while acquiring reading comprehension and argumentation skills. The course also aims to familiarize students with the genre of “poetry” as material for this purpose and help them acquire a sense of sensitivity to language.
This course aims to familiarize students with and encourage them to enjoy poetry written in English. Each class will consist of a close reading of one American poem. The class will proceed in three stages (presentation, discussion, and summary by the instructor). Students will deepen their reading of the works, focusing on the interpretation and appreciation of individual texts and the social and cultural context in which the works were created.
In addition to weekly assignments, students will be required to read Daisy Miller by Henry James and write an essay on it.

受講者には予習課題を提出してもらいます。授業前にテクストの該当部分に目を通してきてください。その際に、疑問に思ったこと、重要だと思った部分について、クラスで共有できるようにするためとなります。発表担当時以外の授業での事前学修には毎回2時間程度を要します。
発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人で準備を進めてもらいます。
授業後にはコメントペーパーを提出してもらいます。授業前と授業後で、詩の理解や解釈、学んだ内容の復習・整理を行い、次回以降の授業に生かせるようにしてください。事後学修にも毎回2時間程度を要します。

毎回扱う詩は1～2頁ほどの短いものばかりです。まずは自分なりに作品の印象を掴んだうえで授業に参加してください。自分の考えを表現する力と、クラスメートの感想を聞いて把握する力の両方を培ってもらうことこともまた目指します。
カリキュラム・マップに示されている「今後の学習・研究の基礎となる読解力」の養成を目指しながら、読解力および議論の方法を身に着けつつ、レポートで論理的に提示する方法を練習します。そのための素材として「詩」のジャンルに慣れ、言語に敏感に反応する感覚を身に着けてもらうことも目指します。

この授業ではアメリカ詩を毎回1篇ずつ精読していきます。授業は、三段階（発表、ディスカション、教員によるまとめ）で進めます。個々のテクストの解釈と鑑賞のみならず、作品が生み出された社会的・文化的背景にも意識を向けながら、作品の読みを深めていきます。
また毎週の授業とは別に、課題図書としてヘンリー・ジェイムズの『デイジー・ミラー』を翻訳で読み、中間レポートを提出してもらいます。
