Students in this course will develop the ability to read English texts accurately and to express their interpretations persuasively and logically. At the same time, the course aims to introduce them to the diverse cultures and histories of the English-speaking world, as well as to the pleasures of reading literature.
Students in this course will read modern and contemporary English short fiction. They are expected to complete a close reading of the assigned section before each class. After the designated presenter summarises the passage and offers key annotations and interpretive points, the class as a whole will discuss the issues raised. After each session, all students will submit a reaction paper. Besides classwork, students will read an assigned text, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and submit an essay on it.

英語のテクストを正確に読解する能力、及びテキストについての自らの解釈を説得的かつ論理的に表現する能力を養う。また、英語圏の多様な文化・歴史に親しむと同時に、文学を読む楽しみに触れる。
Students in this course will develop the ability to read English texts accurately and to express their interpretations persuasively and logically. 本授業では、近現代のイギリス短編小説を読解する。受講者は毎回、指定範囲を事前に精読して授業に参加する。各回の担当者が指定範囲の概要・注釈・解釈を発表したのち、提示された論点について、クラス全体で議論を行う。授業後には、全員にリアクションペーパーを提出してもらう。また、授業と並行して、課題図書であるエミリー・ブロンテ『嵐が丘』を読み、中間レポートを執筆する。
