Through close reading of literary works, students will develop a deeper understanding of, and imaginative engagement with, other people and societies, while strengthening their capacity to articulate their ideas clearly and critically.
Gothic literature, which flourished in nineteenth-century Britain, emerged as a counter-movement to the Enlightenment’s emphasis on rationality. It privileged emotion, incorporated supernatural elements, and brought to light the social anxieties of contemporary British society. In this course, we will undertake close readings of short and medium-length Gothic texts, with particular attention to the oppression of women as one such societal anxiety. The course will be conducted in seminar format, with two students assigned as presenters each week. Presenters are expected to explain their designated sections using handouts prepared in advance and, as discussion leaders, to propose questions and topics for critical debate. In addition, students are required to read Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), a novel rich in Gothic motifs, and to submit a mid-term report on the text. The final week of the course will be devoted to a reading session focusing on Jane Eyre.

文学作品の精読とディスカッションを通じて、自分と異なる他者や社会に対する理解と想像力を養うとともに、批評的に思考し、それを明晰に述べる力を深めます。

イギリスで19世紀に流行したゴシック文学は、合理的理性を重視した啓蒙主義へのカウンター・ムーヴメントとして、感情に重きを置き、超自然的な要素を交えながら、当時の社会の不安をあぶり出しました。この授業では、そのような社会不安の要素の一つとして、女性に対する抑圧を描いた中短編を精読します。授業では毎週2名程度の担当者を決め、ゼミ形式で授業を進めます。発表者は準備した資料をもとに発表範囲の内容について説明をするとともに、ディスカッションのリーダーとして質問や論題を提示してもらいます。また、ゴシック的なモチーフをふんだんに用いたシャーロット・ブロンテの小説『ジェイン・エア』（1847）を課題図書として中間レポートを提出してもらい、授業の最終週では作品の読書会を行います。
