Students will deepen their understanding of critical terms and analytical methods in literary studies, cultivating the critical eye, insight, and a sense of language through close reading of works.
In this course, we will closely read one poem at a time by William Carlos Williams, a major modernist poet in 20th-century America. Each class session will proceed as a whole-class discussion based on handouts prepared by the assigned student. 1) The student responsible for translation, annotation, and questions (group presentation) will present a translation of the work, explain any vocabulary requiring annotation, and list nine questions about the work. 2) The student responsible for analysis (individual presentation) will present their interpretation of the work. Throughout the course, the instructor will provide commentary and explanations, discussing modernism-related criticism as well.

20世紀アメリカを代表するモダニズム詩人ウィリアム・カーロス・ウィリアムズの詩作品を毎回一篇ずつ精読していきます。授業は毎回、二つの役割の担当者が準備したハンドアウトをもとに、クラス全体でディスカッションを行っていきます。１）訳・注・質問担当者（グループ発表）は、作品の試訳を提示し、註釈が必要な語彙の説明、作品に関する問いを９つ挙げてもらいます。２）考察担当者（個人発表）は、作品の考察を発表してもらいます。随時、教員によるコメントと説明をおりまぜ、モダニズム関連の批評も扱います。
