As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar is intended to familiarize students with the basic terms and methods of literary analysis. Students will learn how to locate a given text in its historical and cultural context and practice in producing a coherent argument that examines a literary text from a specific thematic perspective by composing a term paper.
Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, are naturally associated with the major genre of detective fiction. And Holmes stories can be said to be fully equipped with interesting cases and inferences. But there is more to reading Doyle's work than just that. In this seminar, a close reading of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), one of the most famous Holmes’ stories, will enable students to examine Doyle's use of grotesque descriptions, references to the scientific discourse of the time, and the use of different styles of narration. Learning how to read texts analytically through this seminar will enable you to read literature more richly.

受講者は全員授業前にテクストの該当部分を精読し、わからない箇所（語彙・構文などの英語に関する問題から、話の流れや特定の事物への言及などの内容にかかわる疑問に至るまで、どのようなものでも）は授業中に解決できるようにメモしてきてください。また、重要だと思った部分についても、授業中にクラス全体と共有できるように記録してきてください。発表担当時以外の授業での事前学修には毎回2時間程度を要します。
発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人で準備を進めてもらいます。
授業後には、事後学修として学んだ内容の復習・整理を行い、次回以降のディスカッションに生かせるようにしてください。事後学修にも毎回2時間程度を要します。

授業中にもうけるディスカッションの時間では、自発的に意見や疑問点などを発言していただきます。授業貢献の評価の大部分がこの発言によって決まるので、本科目では高い積極性が求められることに留意してください。
一篇の小説を題材にとり、カリキュラム・マップが目標に定める「文学研究の基礎となる専門用語と分析方法」の修得を目指します。作品を歴史的・文化的背景に位置付けつつ、特定のテーマに沿ってテクストを分析し、首尾一貫した議論にまとめるすべを学び、最終的にはレポート作成を実践します。

シャーロック・ホームズという探偵と、その生みの親であるコナン・ドイルは当然ながら推理小説というフィクションの一大ジャンルと結びつけられます。そしてホームズものは事件と推理の面白さも十分に備えているといえるでしょう。しかし、ドイルの作品の読みどころはそれだけではありません。本演習では、ホームズの登場する作品のなかでも傑作として名高い『バスカヴィル家の犬』（1902）を精読することによって、ドイルによる怪奇的描写の妙、当時の科学言説への言及、様々な様式の語りの使用などを検討します。本演習を通してテクストを分析的に読む方法を学べば、文学をより豊かに読むことができるようになるはずです。
