Students in this course will acquire the basic technical terms and analytical methods of literary studies through close reading of English literary texts and will develop the ability to construct and communicate logical interpretations of literary texts.
In this course, students will read selected short stories by H. G. Wells (1866–1946). Wells, whose notable works include The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898), combined the most up-to-date scientific knowledge of his time, acquired through the teaching of leading scholars such as T. H. Huxley, with a singular imagination that borders on madness. By closely reading a selection of the many imaginative works he produced at the end of the nineteenth century, students will explore Wells’s fictional worlds and also learn fundamental narrative techniques and acquire essential cultural and historical knowledge for literary analysis.
Students are expected to complete a close reading of the assigned section before each class. After the designated presenter summarises the passage and offers key annotations and interpretive points, the class as a whole will discuss the issues raised. After each session, all students will submit a reaction paper.

英語文学作品の読解を通じて、文学研究の基礎となる専門用語と分析方法を身につけ、それらを用いて文学作品の解釈を論理的に構成し、伝達する能力を養う。
Students in this course will acquire the basic technical terms and analytical methods of literary studies through close reading of English literary texts and will develop the ability to construct and communicate logical interpretations of literary texts.
本授業では、H. G. ウェルズ（1866-1946）の短編小説を精読する。『タイムマシン』(1895)、『透明人間』(1897)、『宇宙戦争』(1898)など今なお誰もが知る小説の数々を残したウェルズは、T. H. ハクスリーら一流の学者の教えを受けた当時最新の科学知識と、狂気に肉薄する異形の想像力の持ち主であった。19世紀末に彼が執筆した膨大な空想小説群から、その一部を精読し、彼の小説世界の面白さを味わうと同時に、基本的な小説技法、文化的・歴史的知識を学ぶ。
受講者は毎回、指定範囲を事前に精読して授業に参加する。各回の担当者が指定範囲の概要・注釈・解釈を発表したのち、提示された論点について、クラス全体で議論を行う。授業後には、全員にリアクションペーパーを提出してもらう。
