Upon completion of this course, students are expected to learn basic concepts of literary criticism through reading a literary text in English, and to nourish their critical ability to carry out their own literary research.
Caryl Churchill (1938- ), one of the representative British female playwrights in the 20th century, is known for her characteristic feminist themes and postmodern styles. In this course, students will read Churchill's Top Girls (1982) closely in a seminar style.
Written at a time when the Equal Pay Act of 1970 and the Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 promoted women's social advancement, and when Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first female Prime Minister (1979), the play portrays the way of life of Marlene, a ‘top girl’ who embodies Thatcherism, in an avant-garde style and from multiple viewpoints. Students are required to give a presentation and join group discussions about the play in order to deepen their understanding of the various ideas the play offers and improve the ability to express their ideas.

この授業では、英語で書かれた文学作品を原文で読みながら基礎的な文学批評概念を学び、文学研究を遂行する批評能力を育てることを目標とする。
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to learn basic concepts of literary criticism through reading a literary text in English, and to nourish their critical ability to carry out their own literary research.
キャリル・チャーチル（1938— ）は20世紀を代表するイギリスの女性劇作家であり、テーマ的にはフェミニズム、スタイル的にはポストモダニズムがその顕著な特徴といえる。この授業では、チャーチルの代表作『トップ・ガールズ』（1982）を演習形式で精読する。
本作品は、男女同一賃金法（1970）や性差別法（1975）によって女性の社会進出が進み、マーガレット・サッチャーがイギリス初の女性首相（1979）となった時代に書かれ、サッチャリズムを体現するような「トップ・ガール」であるマーリーンの生き方を前衛的な様式を用いて多面的に描き出すものである。受講生は、個人発表とグループ・ディスカッションを通じ、作品が提示する多様な視点について理解を深め、自らの意見を言語化することを学ぶ。
