The aim of this course is to help students understand basic methods of literary criticism and to develop their ability to critically read literary texts and articulate their own interpretations through the close reading of an English drama.
In this course, students will closely read The History Boys (2006) by Alan Bennett, one of the most influential contemporary British playwrights.
Set in a British grammar school in the 1980s, The History Boys explores the relationships between teachers of history and a group of boys preparing for entrance examinations to Oxford and Cambridge. Through this setting, the play reveals postwar British education, the intersections of knowledge, power, and class, and the complexity of male sexuality. Through individual presentations and group discussions, students will learn to interpret the various voices presented in the text, articulate their own responses, and share their ideas with others in the seminar.

現代イギリスを代表する劇作家のひとりであるアラン・ベネットによる『ヒストリー・ボーイズ』（2006）を演習形式で精読する。
『ヒストリー・ボーイズ』は1980年代のイギリスのグラマー・スクールを舞台に、歴史を教える教師たちとオクスフォード大学やケンブリッジ大学を目指す少年たちの関係を描きながら、戦後イギリスの教育制度や、知・権力・階級の交差、そして男性たちのセクシャリティについて語っている。この授業では、個人発表とグループディスカッションを通して、テキストで描かれる人々の声を読み取り、そこから得た自身の考えをクラスのなかで言語化し、共有することを学ぶ。
