By tracing the history of the blues as a musical genre, this course aims to explore the process by which art is born, develops, and is received, along with the interplay between the society, ethnicity, and culture that produced it. It seeks to deepen understanding of the underlying dynamism behind artistic and literary expression.
We will read Blues People: Negro Music in White America (1963), one of the essays on Black music written by LeRoi Jones [Amiri Baraka], himself a creative artist. The content spans musical form, society, and economics.
For class, pre-assigned teams will summarize their assigned sections. They will then prepare questions about the structure of the argument and the interpretation of vocabulary, leading to a discussion with the entire class.

自身創作家でもあるLeRoi Jones [Amiri Baraka]が著した黒人音楽の論考の一つ、Blues People: Negro Music in White America (1963)を読みます。内容は音楽形式、社会、経済にわたります。
授業はあらかじめ割り振られたチームが、分担した箇所の要約をしてもらいます。そのうえで論の立て方や語彙の解釈について質問を用意してもらい、クラス全体での議論へとつなげます。
