Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and their interpreting skill of a literary text.
We will closely read The Call of the Wild (1903), a masterpiece by Jack London, who led American naturalist literature from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Buck, a mongrel dog living as a domesticated dog on a quiet farm in California, is suddenly kidnapped one day and sold as a sled dog, and he comes to change as he spends time under the harsh environment in the Yukon Territory, Canada. Let's witness Buck's change as we read the text.
At the same time, students will develop basic skills in analyzing literary texts, focusing on subject matter, structure, style, motifs, rhetoric, etc.

文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、文学作品を解釈するための基礎を培います。
Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and their interpreting skill of a literary text.
19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけてアメリカの自然主義文学を牽引した小説家ジャック・ロンドン（1876-1916）の代表作『荒野の呼び声』（The Call of the Wild、1903）を精読します。カリフォルニアの長閑な農園で飼い犬として暮らしていた雑種犬バックが、ある日突然誘拐され、そり犬として売りに出され、カナダ・ユーコン準州の過酷な環境下で過ごす中でいかに変わっていくのか――テクストを読みながらバックの変化を追いかけてみたいと思います。
本授業では同時に、主題、構成、文体、モチーフ、修辞法等に注目し、文学テクストを分析する基礎力も養います。
