Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and their interpreting skill of a literary text.
We will closely read “The Scarlet Plague,” a novella by Jack London (1876-1916), a leading figure in American naturalist literature from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The story is set in a desolate San Francisco in the year 2073. The sole survivor, an old man, recounts the end of humanity and the collapse of civilization caused by a plague known as the Scarlet Plague. What happens in a world plunged into catastrophe by a pandemic? What chaos and transformations are people forced to endure? As we think about how it might show a possible dystopian reflection of our own modern society, let us listen closely to the old man’s tale.
Students will also develop basic skills in analyzing literary texts, focusing on subject matter, structure, style, motifs, rhetoric, etc.

文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、文学作品を解釈するための基礎を培います。

19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけてアメリカの自然主義文学を牽引した小説家ジャック・ロンドン（1876-1916年）による中篇ディストピア小説「赤死病」（“The Scarlet Plague”、1912年）を精読します。物語の舞台は2073年の荒れ果てたサンフランシスコ。赤死病という疫病による人類滅亡と文明崩壊の顛末が、ただ一人の生き残りである老人によって語られる物語です。パンデミックによってカタストロフィを迎えた世界で何が起こったのか、人々はいかなる混乱と変貌を強いられたのか──私たちが生きる現代社会のあり得たかもしれぬ陰画を物語に透かし見ながら、老人の語りに耳をすましてみましょう。
本授業では同時に、主題、構成、文体、モチーフ、修辞法等に注目して文学テクストを分析する基礎力も養います。
