This course aims to introduce students to English poetry, offer basic knowledge of form and poetic metre, and provide opportunities to experience the joy of critical debate through careful reading of historically famous English poems.
Students will read an English poem of approximately twenty lines every class, and using the works, students will learn about tone, rhyme, alliteration, anastrophe, personification, and other poetic devices used in English literature. In addition, students will be divided into two groups in class. The first group will present and prepare a handout introducing the author and historical background, type of poem, poetic metre, interpretation of content, thoughts, etc. The other group will be required to offer commentary on an aspect of the presentation. This structure offers an introduction to academic debate and provides opportunity for active participation from every student. Reading selections will cover both old poetry (Shakespeare, etc.) and modern poetry. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.

これまでに授業などで英詩を読んだことがあれば、再読しておく。毎回扱う英詩を授業前に熟読して準備し（各回約2時間）、授業で得られた知識を参考にして詩を読み直し、推薦された参考文献などにも目を通して内容理解を深める（各回約2時間）。毎回Googleドライブにアップロードされる音声・映像・動画資料を授業の前後に視聴すると学習効果が高まる。

本格的に英詩を読もうとする場合に必要な形式や韻律についての初歩的知識を身につけながら、英文学史上でよく知られた代表的な詩をじっくり読んで味わい、同じ作品を読んだ参加者同士が議論をぶつけ合う楽しさを味わうことを目標とする。
This course aims to introduce students to English poetry, offer basic knowledge of form and poetic metre, and provide opportunities to experience the joy of critical debate through careful reading of historically famous English poems.
実際の作品を題材として、格調、脚韻、頭韻、倒置法、擬人法など英詩の規則を一緒に学んだのちに、20行程度の短い英詩を毎回一つずつ読んでゆく。授業では二つの担当グループを予め決めて、レジュメを用意してもらい、一方が詩人とその時代、詩の形式・韻律と内容解釈・評価などについて発表し、他方がそれに対して必ず何らかのコメントをするという形で全員参加の活発な議論の糸口を作ってもらう。Shakespeareなど古い時代の詩も読むが、現代に近い詩を多く取り上げたい。最初の時間に詳しい授業計画表を配布。
