This seminar aims to develop basic skills for reading short stories through close readings of twentieth-century American short fiction. Focusing on short stories as a literary form, the course examines how narrative voice, structure, omission, and symbolism function in these texts. Rather than discussing thematic content alone, students will learn to analyze literary works by paying attention to who narrates the story, how it is told, and what is left unsaid.
In this seminar, students will learn how to read literary texts through lectures and student presentations, focusing on twentieth-century American short stories. In the first half of the course, the instructor will introduce key perspectives for reading literary works, such as narrative voice, structure, omission, and symbolism, through close readings and explanation. In the second half, students will give presentations based on their own close readings of the texts and engage in class discussion. Students are required to prepare handouts for their presentations, and detailed guidance on presentation format and expectations will be provided in class.

授業で扱う作品については、あらかじめ全文を読了したうえで出席していることを前提とします。予習にあたっては、作品中の不明な語句や表現を事前に調べ、内容理解に努めること。そのうえで、物語の展開や表現について疑問に思った点や気になった箇所をメモして授業に臨んでほしい。各回の予習には2時間程度を想定しているが、発表担当者については、これ以上の学修時間が必要となる。

本演習では、20世紀アメリカの短編小説を精読しながら、短編という形式がどのような語り、構成、省略、象徴によって成り立っているのかを学びます。個々の作品の主題を論じるだけでなく、「誰が、どのように語っているのか」「何が書かれていないのか」といった読解の技術に注目し、文学作品を分析するための基礎的な視点を身につけることを目標とします。

本授業では、20世紀アメリカの短編小説を題材に、文学テクストをどのように読むのかを、講義と学生による発表を通じて学んでいきます。授業前半では、教員による講読や解説を中心に、文学作品を読む際に着目すべき点（語り、構成、省略、象徴など）を確認します。後半では、履修者による発表を行い、テクストの精読をもとにした議論を深めていく。発表にあたっては、事前に発表資料（ハンドアウト）を作成してもらいますが、その作成方法や留意点については授業内で説明します。学期末には、授業で学んだ読解の技術を総合的に用いる課題として、同一の短編小説を題材にレポートを作成します。
