This course will provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with rhymes through the close reading of American poetry, develop a sensitivity to language, and learn the fundamentals of using historical and cultural context in understanding and analyzing works.
The course will focus on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, a 19th-century American woman poet, and will proceed with a close reading of one poem in each class. The class will consist of three stages (presentation, discussion, and teacher's explanation), and each presenter (two or three students each time) will prepare a handout. In addition to the presentations, each student will be assigned a commentator. Each student will submit a reaction paper after class. (You will be asked to write how your interpretation of the poem changed (or did not change) between the pre-class preparation and the post-class. Questions in the reaction papers will be shared and explained at the beginning of the following class, serving also as a review.

本講義ではアメリカ詩（エミリ・ディキンスン）の精読を通して、作品を分析・考察するための基礎を学ぶことを目的とします。韻文に慣れ、言語に敏感に反応する感覚を身に着けると共に、作品を理解するために歴史的・文化的背景を作品分析に用いる練習の場を重ねて行きます。

アメリカ詩を毎回一篇ずつ精読していきます。19世紀アメリカの女性詩人エミリ・ディキンスンの詩が中心になります。授業は三段階構成（１担当者の発表、２ディスカション、３教師によるまとめ）になっており、発表者（毎回2～3人）はハンドアウトを準備したうえで発表担当をしてもらいます。発表とは別にコメンテーターも各自、分担してもらいます。授業後には各自、リアクションペーパーを提出することによって、予習段階と授業後とでは詩の解釈がどのように変化したのか（或いは、そのままだったのか）を確認しましょう。またリアクションペーパーで受けた質問は、翌週の冒頭で共有しながら復習を兼ねて説明します。
