Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and think about the human relationships in literature.
Now that daily life has begun again after the unprecedented epidemic disaster and the resulting stay-home life, we are witnessing the transformation of the society, culture, and human relationships surrounding us. What does it mean for people to interact, dialogue, and connect with each other? In this course, we will consider such questions through a close reading of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men (1937).
At the same time, students in this course will analyze the literary text with paying attention to the themes, structure, style, motifs and rhetoric.

文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、文学に描かれる人間の関係性について考える。
Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and think about the human relationships in literature.
未曽有の疫禍とそれに伴うステイホーム生活を経て、再び日常生活が始まったいま、私たちは、社会や文化、自分たちを取り巻く人間関係の変容などを現在進行形で目の当たりにしている。人と人が出会い、対話し、交流するとは、一体どういうことなのか。本講では、20世紀アメリカ文学を代表する小説家ジョン・スタインベック（1902-68）の『二十日鼠と人間』（1937）の精読を通して、そのような問題について考えてみたい。
同時に、文学テクストの主題、構成、文体、モチーフ、修辞法等に注目し、作品を分析する力を養いたい。
