Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and taste the madness depicted in American literature.
In American literature, people often go mad. Hawthorne's scientist exclaims with glee when he loses his wife, Melville's captain relentlessly chases a whale that has eaten one of his legs, Faulkner's old lady sleeps with her dead lover, and Fitzgerald's hero is gunned down by a man who has lost his mind. One might even say that American literature is obsessed by madness, which reminds us of Leslie Fiedler's comment that American literature is, in essence, Gothic novels. How does one go mad, how does madness chain together, and how does madness create literature and society? In this course, with such questions in mind, we will read some American fictions on madness.
At the same time, students will develop basic skills in analyzing literary texts, focusing on subject matter, structure, style, motifs, rhetoric, etc.

毎回全員が参加する演習形式の授業であるため、特別な理由のない限り、毎回の出席を必須とします。
文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、アメリカ文学に描かれた狂気を味わいます。
Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and taste the madness depicted in American literature.
アメリカ文学において、人々は狂いに狂います。ホーソーンの科学者は妻を喪ったときに歓喜の声を発し、メルヴィルの船長は己の片足を喰らった鯨を執拗に追いかけ、フォークナーの老嬢は死せる恋人と添い寝し、フィッツジェラルドのヒーローは発狂した男に銃殺されます。アメリカ文学は狂気の独壇場である、とさえ言えるかもしれません。アメリカ文学の本質は〈ゴシック小説〉である、という批評家レスリー・フィードラーの言葉を思い出します。いかにして人は狂い、いかにして狂気は連鎖し、いかにして狂気が文学と社会を創っていくのか――そのようなことを考えるという建前で、狂気に満ちたアメリカ小説をじっくり味読してみたいと思います。
本授業では同時に、主題、構成、文体、モチーフ、修辞法等に注目し、文学テクストを分析する基礎力も養います。
