Through the examination of representations of nature and the environment in American literature from an ecocritical perspective, this course aims to provide students with a systematic understanding of relevant theoretical foundations, methodologies, and critical terminology. Students will also develop essential academic skills, including the preparation of reading summaries, oral presentations, and written reports. By participating actively in class discussions and engaging in research-oriented projects, students will cultivate the critical perspectives necessary for advanced literary study.
This course focuses on the reading of American short stories and critical essays, with particular attention to texts that can be considered works of environmental literature. Students will explore these materials while acquiring key concepts and approaches in ecocritical theory. The course will be organized into three main components: instructor lectures, student presentations, and class-wide discussions. Presenters will be required to prepare and distribute summaries of the assigned readings. In order to ensure thorough preparation of the English texts, several unannounced quizzes will be administered during the semester.

アメリカ文学の短編小説と批評を読みます。環境文学と呼びうるテクストを取り上げ、エコクリティシズムの理論を身につけながら探求します。授業形式は、教員の解説、学生の発表、クラス全体での議論の３パートから構成されます。担当者にはレジュメを用意してもらいます。全員が英文をしっかりと予習しているかを確認するために、抜き打ちのクイズを数回行います。
