Through the exploration of nature and environmental representations in American poetry and novels from the perspective of ecocriticism, this course will develop students' understanding of its theoretical foundations, methodologies, and terminology. Additionally, students will strengthen essential skills in preparing handouts, delivering presentations, and writing reports. Active participation in class discussions and the completion of research projects will further hone the critical perspectives crucial for literary scholarship.
This course examines American poetry and novels, focusing on how they depict nature, human-environment relationships, and intersections with race and gender. Through Hemingway's short stories, we explore environmental imagination and literary representation. The course includes instructor-led sessions, student presentations, and discussions to develop critical analysis skills, with quizzes to ensure thorough engagement with the readings.

アメリカ文学の詩や小説における自然/環境の描写をエコクリティシズムの視点から探求することを通じて、理論的基盤、方法論、術語を体系的に身につけます。さらには、演習に必要なレジュメ作成、発表、レポート作成の基礎を固め、授業での積極的発言や研究プロジェクトの実践を通じて、文学研究に不可欠な批判的視座を磨きます。

アメリカ文学の散文と短編小説、および批評を精読し、文学テクストが自然や〈環境〉をいかに描いてきたのか、自然に対する人間の関係がどのように変遷してきたのか、その関係性が人種やジェンダーとどのような影響関係をもつのか、といった問いを探求します。ヘミングウェイの代表的な短編テクストを読むことで、環境的想像力と文学表象の様式を研究します。授業形式としては、教員の解説、学生の発表、クラス全体での議論を通じて、批評的分析力を養います。担当者にはレジュメを用意してもらいます。受講者全員が、英文を丁寧に読みこんでいるかのクイズを適宜行います。
