Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and their interpreting skill of a literary text.
We will closely read the short story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1841) by nineteenth-century American writer, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49). This work, in which the mystery of murders in Paris is unraveled through the deductions of detective Dupin, is the first detective story in history to feature a locked-room murder. It became the prototype for the detective fiction genre that continues to this day. In this class, while simply enjoying the work as a detective story through the process of solving the mystery, we will also explore it from cultural and historical perspectives as a work reflecting various aspects of nineteenth-century culture and society.
Students will also develop basic skills in analyzing literary texts, focusing on subject matter, structure, style, motifs, rhetoric, etc.

毎回全員が参加する演習形式の授業であるため、特別な理由のない限り、毎回の出席を必須とします。
文学作品の精読を通して、英文読解力の向上を図るとともに、文学作品を解釈するための基礎を培います。

19世紀のアメリカ人作家エドガー・アラン・ポー（1809-49年）による短篇小説「モルグ街の殺人」（“The Murders in the Rue Morgue”、1841年）を精読します。パリで起こった殺人事件の謎が探偵デュパンの推理によって解きほぐされていく本作は、密室殺人を題材とする史上初の推理小説であり、現代まで続く推理小説という文学ジャンルの原型となった小説です。本授業では、謎解きのプロセスをとおして本作を推理小説として単純に愉しみながらも、19世紀文化・社会の諸相を映し出した作品として文化史的な視線からも本作を読んでいきたいと思います。
本授業では同時に、主題、構成、文体、モチーフ、修辞法等に注目して文学テクストを分析する基礎力も養います。
