As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar is intended to familiarize students with the basic terms and methods of literary analysis. It takes up contemporary British short stories. Students will learn how to locate a given text in its historical and cultural context and practice in producing a coherent argument that examines a literary text from a specific thematic perspective by composing a term paper.
Ali Smith is one of the most acclaimed contemporary writers in English. Her recently completed 'Seasonal Quartet' is attracting considerable attention in Japan, and critical readings of the work are growing rapidly. As an introduction to the author's works, this seminar will look at some of the short stories collected in The Whole Story and Other Stories (2003). Smith's work is full of surprising literary devices and interesting cultural references, and a close reading of some of these will allow you to experience the pleasure of studying literature.

現代イギリス小説を題材に取り、カリキュラム・マップが目標に定める「文学研究の基礎となる専門用語と分析方法」の修得を目指します。各作品を歴史的・文化的背景に位置付けつつ、特定のテーマに沿ってテクストを分析し、首尾一貫した議論にまとめるすべを学び、最終的にはレポート作成を実践します。

現代の英語文学の担い手の中で特に評価の高い作家の一人として、アリ・スミスの名前を挙げることができます。2020年に完結した「四季四部作」は、現在日本でも多くの関心を集めており、文学研究の場では次々とその分析が発表されています。本演習では、このスミスの手になる作品への導入として、The Whole Story and Other Stories (2003)に収められた短編小説を読みます。様々な仕掛けがしてあり、興味深い文化的ディテールにも満ちているスミスの作品を精読すれば、きっと文学を研究する楽しさに触れることができるでしょう。
