As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar is intended to familiarize students with the basic terms and methods of literary analysis. Students will learn how to locate a given text in its historical and cultural context and practice in producing a coherent argument that examines a literary text from a specific thematic perspective by composing a term paper.
Biography, the non-fiction literature that recounts the life of a real person, has long been one of the most widely read genres in Britain. In this seminar, we will closely read a parody of this genre, Flush: A Biography (1933). The author, Virginia Woolf, is not only a prominent modernist writer, but also the daughter of Leslie Stephen, who led the gigantic enterprise of compiling the Dictionary of National Biography. As Such, Flush is both a well-informed parodic biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s pet dog, and a fascinating literary text that reflects modernist and feminist thoughts. Through the reading of this work, you will learn about British culture, as well as various literary techniques.

発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人で準備を進めてもらいます。
授業後には、事後学修として学んだ内容の復習・整理を行い、次回以降のディスカッションに生かせるようにしてください。事後学修にも毎回2時間程度を要します。

授業中にもうけるディスカッションの時間では、自発的に意見や疑問点などを発言していただきます。授業貢献の評価の大部分がこの発言によって決まるので、本科目では高い積極性が求められることに留意してください。
比較的短い20世紀前半の文学作品を用いて、カリキュラム・マップが目標に定める「文学研究の基礎となる専門用語と分析方法」の修得を目指します。作品を歴史的・文化的背景に位置付けつつ、特定のテーマに沿ってテクストを分析し、首尾一貫した議論にまとめるすべを学び、最終的にはレポート作成を実践します。

実在した人物の生涯をひとつの物語にまとめたノンフィクション文学である「伝記」は、イギリスでは古くからたいへん広く読まれてきたジャンルの一つです。本演習では、この伝記というジャンルのある種のパロディである『フラッシュ』（1933）を精読します。著者であるヴァージニア・ウルフは言わずと知れたモダニズムを代表する作家の一人であると同時に、『イギリス国民伝記事典』という超弩級の辞書編纂事業を指揮した文人レズリー・スティーヴンの娘でもありました。そんなウルフが書いた『フラッシュ』は、実在の詩人エリザベス・バレット・ブラウニングの飼い犬を主人公とする伝記のパロディであるとともに、モダニズム的・フェミニズム的思想を反映した興味の尽きない文学テクストでもあります。本作の読解を通して、イギリス文化について学びつつ、様々な文学の技法を学びましょう。
