【Course Objectives】

This course will have two goals: 1) for students to improve their English and learn about interpreting and analyzing literature, and 2) to learn about the Gothic genre and its importance to the American literary canon.

【Course Contents】

This course will focus on Gothic literature in America from the 19th century to the present. After learning about the basic elements of the Gothic as a literary genre, students will have the chance to examine different sub-genres. They will also try to make connections between the Gothic and other literary genres, such as fantasy, realism, science fiction, and romanticism. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and explaining why Gothic is considered to be "scary." To that end, we will frequently discuss the use of (or lack of) supernatural and psychological elements in the stories.
