【Course Objectives】

Through the practice of sharing and discussing a wide variety of legends and tales from Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and Australia, this course will introduce some aspects of the many cultures, beliefs, and narrative traditions of Pacific Oceania.

【Course Contents】

This course will involve oral storytelling practice, critical analysis of regional history, geography, and politics, and the debate of topics related to the study and understanding of the many island traditions of Pacific Oceania. Following a series of weekly discussions concerning the cultures, histories, and local practices of Oceania, students will be required to compose and present an original work of research related to one of the Pacific island legends discussed during the course.
